Surf is up in Catanduanes this end of September 2024

The surf at Bagasbas beach is relatively flat today, this afternoon, but local surfers – groms, grommets, gurfers and wahines – have their heads together. Tension and excitement could be felt as everyone focused on discussing one thing — the upcoming roadtrip to Magestic Surfing Cup 2024.

If you’ve ever surfed and hung out with the locals, you will probably get excited, too. Checklists are being discussed — routes, budget and modes of transportation were reviewed to make sure everything will go as planned and the whole activity will be as safe as can be. Right now, the only sure thing I’ve learned is that Nyor (Salvador Oclares) will be sharing gasoline fund to get a ride with Allan (Cabanela) on his motorcycle – with their boards hanging on a side surf rack, I suppose.

Organized by the Tourism branch of Baras, Catanduanes’ Local Government Unit (LGU), surfers from all over are invited to join their take on this year’s National Surfing Competition that will officially start on September 30 and end on October 4, 2024 – to be held at Puraran Beach, Baras, Catanduanes.

“Take note of your bottom turns”

That was the advice given by their senior (Mocha Vargas) at a training session two weeks ago – when there were still waves due to two tropical depressions that passed by just outside the beach breaks they played at on an almost daily basis.

Always looking forward to the next event and can’t think of letting the opportunity pass by

“Pangatlong punta ko na po ito sa Catanduanes para sumali sa competition (This is the third time I will be traveling to Catanduanes to join their surf competition). Unang byahe ko po yun noong 2019 (My trip last 2019 was the first time I have ever travelled to compete,” says Ola (Mark Joshua Delos Reyes), a local surfer who got stoked with the experience of joining surf competitions at that time 5 years ago. He further commented that since then, he’s always looking forward to the next annual event and can’t think of letting the opportunity pass him by.

For these surfers, the whole experience is worth much more than actually winning the prize pot. To Ma’m Blessie, Mocha, SeaCup Cafe and all the rest of the supporters and organizers so team “Bagasbas” could particiate, salutations are in order.

Good luck, safe travels and enjoy!
