Surf Season for Kids

As a person who was exposed to and enjoyed looking at these special kind of brave ones who surf Bagasbas beach in Daet, Camarines Norte, I have always wondered (but have not previously recorded) which month is best suited for kids who want to learn to surf – specially since I was tasked to handle a couple of little ones myself.

Times have changed, the seasons – not as much.

Given the Gregorian calendar that we use is not 100% accurate (is there one?), summer still starts in April here in Bicol region – as with the rest of the Philippines. Unlike during my childhood, surf lessons is now made available to kids’ generation during summers – all thanks to Bagasbas Surfers Club, Inc.

Kids are paying attention to Mocha’s instructions on how to stand and balance on a surfboard.

There is surf for kids in June.

That statement is based on personal experience. Throughout the whole month of June this year, waves were favorable for kids wanting to play by the beach or learn to surf. During that time, at least two typhoons passed by the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR), but none have caused drastic change in the way waves came in that would prevent kids from having a fun day – at least at Bagasbas beach.

According to surf instructor slash MDRRMO-licensed lifeguard Mocha Vargas, that beach produces kid-safe waves during the months of June up to September — as long as there’s no looming typhoon or tropical depression.

Kids at heart.

It’s not a laughing matter, but it is normal to see grown-ups ride their long boards on other sets of waves just nearby where the kids are getting their first stoke along with other grommets (a surfer under the age of 16) who hone their riding skills. Kid-sized waves happen to be rideable when a surfer uses a long board.
